The Local Organizing Committee invite you to discover "the other Florence" of the old city centre that is, the food markets of San Lorenzo and Sant'Ambrogio, by choosing one of the proposed tours.
Each itinerary is free of charge, thank to the Local Organizing
Committee and the Agenzia per il Turismo di Firenze (APT), and
a professional tour guide will accompany you in visiting
markets. Since there is a limited number of places available
it is recommended to register by sending an e-mail message by
August 10 to iucr@iucr2005.it, specifying in the subject "APT Tours" and in the message body name and itinerary number (a first come - first serve procedure will be followed).
MARKETS OF FLORENCE:
The districts of San
Lorenzo and Sant'Ambrogio, despite their differences in
history and destiny, have one very significant element in
common: they both boast historic food markets. Here visitors
can discover all the most authentic which the food and wine
traditions of Florence and its surroundings have to
offer.
The visit lasts about three hours, with meeting
time at 9.30 a.m. The meeting point for the visit to the
Market of San Lorenzo and its surrounding area is Piazza
S. Marco, in front of the main entrance of the church. For the
visit to Market of Sant'Ambrogio the meeting point is in
Piazza Santa Croce, beside the statue of Dante. The tours
comprise a walk through the district and a free visit to one
of the important artistic sites, followed by a visit to the
Market. Here the management consortium will offer visitors
tastings of typical products. Finally it will be possible to
visit one of the typical or historical shops of the
district.
